No apology needed! I'm flattered, in fact. I agree with you about the angle, and the fact the Darrell never used it, but it was the only way I could think to incorporate the elements required. If I had the chance to do it over again.... The illustrators mantra.
Late 20th century. That world, while not gone, is much diminished now. I suspect, just as digital replaced traditional illustration, and photography replaced both, as AI improves, publishers will be using more and more of it to replace human creativity and improve their bottom line
Hey, David! Well, that's a blast from the past! Just to let you know, the "Darrell K Sweet" cover you mentioned was actually by...me. I got asked to pastiche Darrell's look since Tor couldn't swing his fees for a back-list book. If you look closely, instead of the DkS signature, it's RdW, or Ratler de Welks, an anagram of his name that I made up to cover my involvement. Art Skellerdew was also on the table, but I couldn't figure out a middle initial in there. Naturally, it's not your favorite of his. Looking back, I'm slightly appalled, myself, but it was a paycheck!
Nick--Sorry about that! I will correct that on my Substack. I was fooled by your pastiche of Darrell's signature. I thought it was an odd angle for one of Darrell's covers. He rarely had a high eyeline like you do.

You are building the chapters for a great history of illustration, David.
